Keeper of Dreams

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 With just seconds to go, Bayern Munich score
The battle of Brussels ends in a hard fought draw
A long range effort, the ‘keeper failed to catch
Atletico Madrid fail in their biggest ever match

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Two days later, that wound was rubbed with salt
Gloves thrown in anger, he believed it was his fault
Conceding four times, Miguel Reina felt great pain
Only a loser’s medal to take back home to Spain

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Hands clasped together, one large, one very small
Father and son on a sunny field playing with a ball
In the footsteps of a giant, a young man showed mettle
Growing old, growing up, with a family score to settle

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Desire burned year on year, a chance in ancient Greece
Only that golden medal can make the nightmare cease
A lucky goal against the run of play, deflected to the net
Milan with scars of their own, were about to repay a debt

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Sands of time ebbed away and another goal was scored
“Maglia fortunata” won; Liverpool and Pepe ignored
History had repeated before the elder Spaniard cried
The long awaited dream in Athens, sadly died

Notes

For the “Goalkeeper” series.

This poem refers to the European Cup Finals of 1974 and 2007. Two of the goalkeepers concerned were father and son. Miguel Reina played for Atletico Madrid in 1974 and Jose “Pepe” Reina for Liverpool in 2007. The quest for that winner’s medal goes on …

Pepe Reina has said that if he wins the European Cup, he will present the medal to his father.
