The Bridge of the ‘Rising Sun’

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 There is a house, down Fulham way
they called the ‘Rising Sun’
and it’s been the ruin of many a poor fan
and God, I know, I’m one

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 A football club was spawned there
and they played in a lighter hue
with shorts down to the ankles
we’re now, in Royal, Blue

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Initially dubbed the Pensioners
with one emblazoned on the crest
now it’s back to the lion rampant
to proudly beat, upon our chests

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Oh mother tell your children
not to follow in my shoes
for what started in the Rising Sun
will bring a lifetime, of the Blues

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Well, I got one foot on the seat
the other planted on concrete grey
I’m goin’ back to Stamford Bridge
to watch, that ball, in play

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 There is a house, down Fulham way
they called the ‘Rising Sun’
and it’s been the ruin of many a poor fan
and God, I know, I’m one

Notes

Thanks to Dachlan Cartwright for prompting me to actually delve into the history of MY club, with his wonderful poem ‘The Birth of Everton’

Chelsea were founded on 10 March 1905 at The Rising Sun pub (now The Butcher’s Hook), opposite the present-day main entrance to the ground on Fulham Road, and were elected to the Football League shortly afterwards.

Of course as soon as I read ‘the Rising Sun’, the wonderful song by the Animals popped into my head, and I then married the tune to updated football centric lyrics!

Apologies to The Animals, member Alan Price, and to the most prolific songwriter of all time : ‘Trad’.

(On a personal note – Happy Birthday to my brother Adrian – even though he is a Hammer)
