Dilemma
¶ 1

With the points that we’re accruing,
there’s a feelgood factor brewing,
as we take the country’s second tier by storm.
And this new-found winning feeling
is distinctly most appealing,
for it’s great to watch a team that is in form.
But we have to ask the question
(at the risk of indigestion)
of the fans who are, in football terms, well-versed –
do we prefer to court derision in the Premier Division
or win games at a canter in the First?

It’s a difficult dilemma
and it might well cause a tremor
in those well-used to heartbreak and despair
to suggest this aberration
(winning games beneath our station)
may be a self-delusional affair.
But I don’t think it’s pretentious,
or in any way contentious,
to ask if we’re (for many years hence) cursed
to invoke complete derision in the Premier Division
and then bask in football glory in the First.
