Football: The People’s Game
¶ 1

The early heroes left the factories
Forged from coalfields all the same
Took the bus with fans on Saturdays
When football was the people’s game

The standing terrace packed to stanchions
Flatcaps and rattles, hearts a flame
Like rocket sparks the goals exploded
For football was the people’s game

Long before the logos circus
With numbered shirts not sponsors names
And superstars were next door heroes
As football was the people’s game

Men like Liddell, Finney, Puskas
Played for glory not the fame
Their skills lit up the finest pitches
And made football the people’s game

A time before the preach of agents
Tickets purchased at the gates
The Q’s would stretch a mile of heaven
Sure football was the people’s game

Snot nosed kids just like their Fathers
Terrace Hymns the faith proclaim
Like Saturdays Pink in grubby fingers
Oh football was the people’s game

Stars were born and shone so brightly
Lesser skills would sweat the way
And tackles came in fast with fury
Sublime football people’s game

The grey of backyard streets on weekdays
Rendered robes of wind and rain
And then the pitch of Saturdays Emerald
All made football the people’s game

Scribbled names on desks and walls
Boots and shinpads for birthdays came
All were bought with Embassy coupons
Ah football was the people’s game

Littlewoods pools and spot the ball
The score draw millions how we prayed
But still me Dad would smile “Next week eh”
Our football was the people’s game

The world cup canvas built for artists
The tarmac pitch where we all played
Copied heroes and won matches
This football was the people’s game

A universal language spoken
Times moves on and all things change
Icebergs melt but not this passion
For football’s still the people’s game
¶ 13

Players come and players go
Some as heroes, forgotten names
But we the fans we’re here forever
That’s why football is the People’s Game
