Denis Law: The Granite King’s Game

From the granite city he rose, bold and fleet
A Scottish marvel, with skill so complete
In Aberdeen’s shadow, his story began
To rule the pitch as the Lawman

Under Shankly’s watchful and guiding eye
Four years at Huddersfield taught him to fly
It was time to move for Scotland’s pride
A record breaker when Torino signed

The “King of Old Trafford,” a title earned
Through passion and fire, his legend burned
Yet fate, so cruel, in a twist would deal
A backheel and United’s fate he’d seal

Honours adorned his illustrious name
A European Cup to crown his fame
Scotland’s goal king, a legacy declared
With King Kenny the throne was shared

Denis Law, a name carved in time
A football poet, a player sublime
Forever cherished in Scotland’s lore
The Granite King’s spirit endures evermore

The Times That I Saw Denis Play

the way he’d glide majestic’lly
like some young whippet running free
who’d tear defences clean apart
in classic red the beating heart
of that great line up of the day
the times that I saw Denis play

a shimmy here a shimmy there
in mud and snow and ev’rywhere
when round-neck long-sleeved shirts came in
I even clutched my sleeves like him
and tried to swivel in his way
in ev’ry game I saw him play

a Chelsea fan still in my teens
United were my second team
and I recall the buzz and vibe
around the Bridge when he’d arrive
with Best and Bobby on the day
when Law would come to town to play

and I recall the journey up
to Old Trafford when in the Cup
it almost felt ok to lose
as Law ran rings around the Blues
and I’m just grateful to this day
for all the times I saw him play
