Burnley or the Bernabéu

We fall in love with football
Almost unconsciously
The exact moment like birth not remembered
Perhaps fragments of infancy posited
Alongside childhood dreams
And growing pains

The sweet confusions
And contradictions of this contrary game
a patch of grass a blur of boots
a swarm of infinite passes and goals
Hopes rise eternal and dashed through
The canals and capillaries of the heart
Joy pulsates, oil for our joints seen better days

Whether Burnley or the Bernabéu
The songs remain the same.
