Groundsman
¶ 1

He is the man with the chalk
and the man with the lime
who draws lines across the field of battle
the centre circle delicately designed
for a stand off at the blowing of the battle horn.
He is the man in a lonely pursuit
who walks the lines
and the perameters of each dispute.
who lines up the goal posts
who fits the nets to contain the terror
who talks to every blade of grass
with his growling motor mower .
and though he has little power
he has it all .

And he will watch quietly
as the gladiators move to and fro
across his lines of demarcation
And he will watch the line watchers
who watch his lines
and he will watch the referee
who watches his lines
and is controlled by his lines
of lime and chalk.

He will watch divets of turf fly through the air
and plan their rebirth
and think badly of the player scraping his studs in his soil
on which he toiled and gave sweat to
and he will boil
and pray for the final whistle
and the cessation of hostilities .
And when it is silent
he will take his tools and make a new tapestry.
