Hope Street
¶ 1

this is for anyone who has ever
walked down Hope Street
felt the Mersey breeze
been rain lashed
or wondered why
the cathedral was
that funny shape
or why we speak
the way we do

this is for anyone
who has been
lost in a Mersey fog
who stopped to listen
to the foghorns
or cats that cry in the night
or who has eaten
scouse, blind scouse or coddle
gone into town on Friday night
walked home
from Huyton
at three in the morning

this is for anyone
who has listened
to the sound of the Beatles
being played
on summers night
through someone’s open window
or felt homesick when they heard
“In My Liverpool Home”
when they weren’t
but wanted to be

this is for anyone who
ever watched a Mersey Derby
and knew just knew
that these were watching
the greatest football teams
on Earth
and even when your side looses
it doesn’t matter for long
because there was always
the next time

this is for anyone
who cried when they saw
the tv pictures from Hillsborough
who wanted to be there to help
but couldn’t
and wondered why
fans enjoying a football match
where herded into pens
and left to die
and for those who
when they read
what the Sun had to say about it
never bought
that filthy rag again

this is for anyone who has ever
walked down Hope Street
and like me thanked their God
they found themselves
in Liverpool
