“How Was It For You?”

Do you remember
The good old days
When pre-season football
Was simply eleven-a-side?
Taken seriously
And played for pride.
No modern multiple substitutions
Changing teams in each half.
Call this football?
You’re having a laugh!
But the game evolves
And continues to thrive
Otherwise we’d be stuck with
Formation two-three-five.
Still on a high
From being top of the pile
It’s been many a year since
I’ve beamed a pre-season smile
Can’t believe all our best players
Are actually still here
Far to early to tempt fate
But there’ll be plenty to cheer.
Multiple tingle down our spines
Scary first goal from Paul Vines.
One swallow doesn’t make a summer
But there’s a nagging feeling
This year won’t be a bummer.
As the cliche goes:
“It’s the hope I can’t stand”
Being successful I’ve never planned.
Too scare to raise expectations high
In finest Dulwich ‘traditions’
The end could be nigh.
Uncertainty on the lease of the ground
Club struggles to account for every pound.
Wish I was an ‘ordinary’ fan
Going to games when I can
Fairweather follower who pick and choose
An on/off tap, if we win or lose.
Problem is I’m an old woman at heart
Worry too much for a start
Time to chill
And enjoy what we have
An amazing team
Under the ‘gaffer’ that’s Gav.
