Humiliation

~
Tears dripping longingly on the Thames,
Sweat moistened the Portugal’s green,
England had died at the hand of Zinedine Zidane.
White flames, a shimmering glow,
Liverpool, London, Norwich, all mourned;
The nation, in despair, wept and wailed.
Beckham in misery;
Owens footwork drained away;
One to zero lead at the half,
Two to one in defeat at the end;
The mother of soccer,
Now, buried in humility by France.
