Drowning against the Green.
Hearts once racing are now deflated
Ready to be pumped as once more they prepare
For qualification bringing more hope to bear
No accusations and no-one to be berated.

Wait for the next time.
Out of nowhere they emerged
Anonymity has gracefully floated away
As the players on the pitch have had their say
Dictating where spirits can be converged.

A futile leap to save the day.
The attempts are earnest but are all in vain
Opposition press forward and increase the lead
The net is another mouth to feed
It is all over and they have been slain.

Meeting on the bridge.
Talk fondly about the goals that have been
Under African skies the night before
So close through the knowledge of the score
Yet so far through unaffected eyes that have never seen.
