We had jackets for goalposts in the grass wild and long
The thrush and the robin competed in song
Kevin and Billy were on the same side
Kevin in goal and Billy out wide

In that game as in life, the aim was fair play
Before hatred and bigotry began to hold sway
Carefree they played by the slow river’s flow
On the banks of the Lagan in days long ago

Kevin and Billy were friends, but how sad
That each boy was told by his mum and his dad
That shamrock and lily would never unite
And Kevin and Billy must get ready to fight

I didn’t stick around long after that game
Atrocities occurred, do the friends now feel shame?
As for me, I remember the slow river’s flow
On the banks of the Lagan in days long ago
