P.S. to “Penalties”

It’s almost as I wrote it, but observant readers might
Have noticed that the wording which is in the final line
Does not maintain the rhythm I adopted in the rhyme.
I’d put in ‘please’ before ‘campaign.’ It made the line too long,
Said the editor, who cut it out. Result: the words seem wrong.
After two or three re-readings of them, an alternative
Rendition came to light, which enables me to live
With the poem as it stands, but (better still) may I
Point out that it is possible to those who care to try?
