Selling Up
¶ 1

Being a Man Utd fan, I only take
A passing interest in our local teams
But I’ve always been fond of ‘The Gas’.
The Bristol underdogs, battling bravely on
Through years of exile at Twerton Park
The glorious return a few years back to BS7,
Near-misses, relegation. And now
They’re being put up for sale
As if anyone could ever put a price
On all that loyalty, goodwill and pride
Shown on the terraces, week in, week out.

I wish them well. Football, like life,
Has peaks and troughs
And maybe, there’s a millionaire
Waiting for the Rovers with a pot of gold.
Let’s hope so. They’ll be singing then
At the Memorial Stadium
Oh yes. ‘The Gas will rise again.’
