That Goal!

Ball belted in from free-kick
to striker who leaps to receive;
balletically balances ball in chest trap
to swivel and pivot,
sending ball looping in
slow motion towards goal,
out of fingertipped reach of
bewildered custodian
left clawing thin air.
Our hero submerged beneath
sea of writhing bodies;
antics mimicked in the stands –
flailing arms and legs everywhere;
feelings of unbridled joy captured
in moment of madness as
red-shirted fan vaults over
three rows of plastic seats.
Black squiggles before my eyes
a sign of the adrenaline
raging through my veins.
Goals scored – striker sold;
Fallon gone, but not forgotten.
