We never had to worry too much @ this time of year
About New Year SADness
Or whether or not our teams were over-playing
We thought about pantomimes
And giant slaying.

And it was never just a case
Of being brave enough to win.
But it was certainly a good place to begin.
Because there was nothing for anyone to fear
Before the onset of Champions League fatigue
And the big 4 teams started divvying up
Which of the cups
They were going to win this year.

Accountants stopped accounting
Stockbrokers stopped ammounting
Quantity surveyors stopped counting
Nurses stopped caring
The Mayor stopped mayoring
Models stopped (nude ones started) wearing
Whole communities started sharing
One special day.
When did it all go away?
Become some old cliche?
January’s first Saturday?
Everyone used to want to be
Part of the F.A Cup
Round 3.

And the country’s interest
Was @ an insurmountable peak
‘Where were you last week?’
People used to shout.
There used to be something worth shouting about.
Football used to come home
Instead of stopping out.
