The Fundamental Things Apply for Senor Aragones

You must remember this
A smile is not a smile,
A joke is not a joke,
A kiss is not a kiss,
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by –
So much of contemporary Europe
Still comes straight from the Crusades,
And a Christian maritime imperialism,
An acquisitive, inquisitorial imperialism
That divides the world into black and white,
Right and wrong,
Coprophagists and coprophobes.
It’s that subterranean, subconscious world
That surfaces when our cultural baggage handlers
Go on strike, relax or fall asleep,
As in a football training session.
It’s also called Heritage and Civilisation.
Aztecs, Incas, Conquistadores, Cortes, Aragones,
The list could be endless
In a historical stream of consciousness.
You must remember this,
A smile is not a smile,
A joke is not a joke,
A kiss is not a kiss,
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.
