The King

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Well, Peter Osgood was good –
Of Stamford Bridge The King.
But Kenny was more regal,
All Koppites will insist.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 And then there’s that skilled Belfast Boy,
Whose family name was Best.
Had he been born in Ancient Rome,
He would have been a Rex.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Now think of Cyrille Regis,
A name to conjure with.
He played up front for West Brom,
And banged lots of goals in.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Our Derby-Winner Andy,
Was even surnamed King!
But a heartthrob from Tupelo,
My, how that lad could sing!

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 I doubt if he played football,
Pulled on a pair of boots.
But he’s the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll,
As no-one can dispute.

Denys E. W. Jones

Notes

A certain Charles Philip Arthur George is only one of several pretenders to the title of King. By all means, Mr Dalgish has a valid claim to the Throne, but let’s not forget one Elvis Presley. I can’t imagine that any fan of Rock ‘n’ Roll (myself included) would ever say Elvis is “Not My King!”
Language notes: for those of you who have no knowledge of Latin at all, Rex is Latin for King, while Regis is the genitive, Of the King, cf Lyme Regis, Bognor Regis.
Finally, I am happy to acknowledge my debt to Mike Bartram. Had I not read his poem entitled The King (6th May 2023), I would never have written this one.
