The Liverpool Dog

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Liverpool had a mascot,
A fierce and mangy spaniel.
They swiped him out of Millwall,
And so they named him Daniel.
Now Daniel had a talent
For predicting freezing weather.
Even Shankly said he was
A great dog altogether.
Whenever snow was forecast,
Daniel, like as not,
Would amble on the pitch and sit down
On the centre spot.
Whenever Daniel did this,
The groundsman always knew
That temperatures were set to drop
And snow and ice were due.
So reliable was this dog
That Tony Gubba found
It worth his while to phone up Shanks
And ask about the hound.
Shanks would draw the curtain
And see where Daniel sat,
And if it was the centre spot,
He’d tell young Gubba that.
And Tony’d tell the viewers
To get on with their knitting.
“Many games are off,” he’d say,
“The Pool’s Spaniel’s sitting.”
