The man who saved his nation

Stepped forward, placed the ball on the white spot,
Took a few steps back… a deep breath exhaled.
The rain of self confidence flooded his tiny Austrian world.

He looked and concentrated beyond the heroic Artur Boruc,
Aiming his eyes to the right of this keeper and at the net,
He dashed to the ball and fired a mighty right foot shot at goal.

The Polish goalie thought the ball would sail left,
Dove with outstretching arms while eyeing the ball on his right.
With few seconds left, Austria football team had leveled.

Raised his arms triumphantly, celebrating the goal,
Surrounded by his teammates and the proud coach;
The fans roared as they sank into their red sea of scarves.

Now, a life time supply of beer for Ivica Vastic—
The hero who shot down the Polish football warriors.
Hurrah Austria! A deserved point, never to be in oblivion.
