Moment captured in freeze frame:
yellow shirted opponent in the midst
of blue hooped sandwich;
three pairs of eyes fixed firmly on the ball,
determination etched in their young faces,
playing to the max.

My son, body a coiled spring,
arms akimbo for balance and protection,
has the ball under control
with unfavoured left foot;
about to swivel and turn away
to bear down on opponent’s goal.

Pipe cleaner legs stretched to the full;
eyes down, a study in concentration;
grimacing with the effort,
the sheer will to win.
Faraway goal beckoning them
for years to come.
