The Sun Never Sets

The Sun never sets on the British Empire so they say
But many a time British football has endured a cloudy day.
World Cup finals with Scottish exits at the first round
That ticket to the second stage remains unfound.
Welsh hearts denied in Cardiff as Russia were too strong
A new John Charles and qualification is all that they long.
Northern Irish memories of ’86 in Spain
Are still a cherished high point far from this recent pain.
So close but yet so far the English fans all repeat
Dreaming of another ’66 to equal that amazing feat.
The Sun never sets on the British Empire so they say
But many a time British football has endured a cloudy day.
