The Wright Stuff

Billy Wright of Wolves was quite a tackler of ferocity,
Honest and straight-talking and devoid of all pomposity,
The first of England’s players to amass a hundred caps,
And the finest centre half that England ever had, perhaps.

The singing group of fifties England was the Beverley Sisters,
Just before the rock ‘n’ rollers, teddies, mods and twisters.
Joy Beverley was pretty and her voice was a delight,
And everyone applauded when she married Mr. Wright.

Before the days of mini-skirts, before the days of sex,
Joy and Billy were the nineteen fifties’ Posh and Becks.
A marriage made in heaven, it was comfortable and strong,
Though I cannot quite imagine Billy Wright in a sarong.
