1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 It may have helped Brazil to win the game
but hasn’t helped them win too many friends.
What started out in wonder soon became
a case of means not justifying ends.
The message that decision sadly sends
is that the team needs help to fan the flame.
A dodgy penalty award transcends
the fact Brazil went on to win the game.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Croatia must be wondering why they came
to try and buck these first match losing trends.
The hosts must win – it’s always been the same,
no matter how the visitor defends.
Once more, football integrity descends
down into something most akin to shame,
although we should have known that Fate contends
the Croats really were not in the frame.

Notes

What started out as a celebration of the beautiful game ended up in sorrow for Croatia. Ultimately the penalty decision may help Brazil to win the group and get an easier draw in the next stage but many people will feel it is just the latest in a long list of dodgy home nation decisions to help the hosts win the World Cup. Having said that, I’ve not been impressed by Neymar till today – I thought he was awesome tonight.
