When Floodlights Shine

they’ve changed so much these days
and long gone so many now
those looming giant Martians
that towered over towns
throwing light and shapes
replaced by modern soulless equivalents
but still they beckon and excite
on nights when floodlights shine

haunting images of yesteryear
when brave and fearless fans
clung on high to metal structures above the crowd
back when health and safety
was a tin in a cupboard with a red cross on it
and a trainer’s trusty medicine of choice :
a ‘magic ‘sponge in a bucket of water
held and spilling as he’d run
through mist and rain and fog and snow
on games when floodlights shone

some were huge like figures from Star Wars
and you can still see them
at classic old school grounds
with Swindon a favourite
where those colossal pylons
have stood triumphant
unchanged for sixty years
allowing us to see
when floodlights shine

but still they beckon
old or new
on one pole or lining stands
dominating the skyline
as you approach by foot or train
inviting and luring you in
on dark evenings through Winter and Spring
those special big match nights
when floodlights shine
