Where We Were That Day (Then & Now)

I can still remember
where I was that day
I was just eighteen years old
lost for words to say
watching on that old TV
there in black and white
in a flat in London town
dancing in the night
Wolstenholme elated..
did it cross the line ?
Toothless Nobby.. Bobby Moore
in the magic time
sitting there in disbelief
soaking up the vibe
Beatles on the radio
glad to be alive
waking up to hear the sounds
out there in the street
kids reliving ev’ry move
football at their feet

fifty five years later
high up on a hill
in a leafy village
hopes are stirring still
suddenly it hits you
all those years gone by
all those days we came so close
all those times we tried
and walking down this quiet lane
silence all around
through these cottage windows
you can hear the sound
expectation in the air
hearts are beating fast
time to banish memories
of failure in the past

sun shines down on Rodborough
high above the town
here inside The Albert
hubub all around
and seeing all these faces
one thing’s crystal clear
ev’ryone’s in bubbles
but grateful to be here

looking at each other
laughter tears and smiles
memories come flooding back
when you were a child
here within this courtyard
as we watch and share
bathing in emotions
sweeping through the air

fifty five years older
happy just to be
on the verge of something
nearing finally
time to stop and pinch yourself
what is it this game
what is it that moves us
in this way the same?
and if this is really it
if this is our time
we’ll remember where we were
til the day we die
we’ll remember words we cried
in our silly way
just like when the Beatles sang
Things We Said Today
