I know it was offside
And three inches wide
But it was the best goal I ever scored

Only the keeper to beat
The shot was so sweet
I ‘lumped’ it over the bar
Talk about candy from a baby
I said ‘please, here you are’

I trapped the ball so well
Defence tracked back and fell
I chested down with my hand
“Handball!” roared the crowd
Referee disallowed
The best goal I ever scored

I went in quite hard
Got shown the red card
For an alleged foul on the keeper
Whose swollen left ‘peeper’
Looked like a Victoria Plum

(I was told later – his neck dislocated
It was still the best goal I ever scored)
¶ 6

The final whistle had gone
And so had the crowd – to their homes
(Even the woman who writes the poems)
That’s when I scored
No-one to applaud
The best goal of my career
