Marching For All Football Clubs-haiku
We march together
thousands wearing the Sky Blue
we will not give in.
Not just for our club
but for clubs everywhere
this is for football.
You’re club could be next
these owners only love cash
only here for money.
They change clubs colours
sack the manager overnight
haven’t got a clue.
They’re loose cannons
treat loyal fans with contempt
bring clubs to their knees.
So we march for all
not just for our beloved club
but for your’s as well.
When Will We Learn~haiku 4
two hours of our lives
we cannot get back again
oh when will we learn?
great expectations
ev’ry single time will bring
great disappointments
pass forward and back
pass forward and back again
we’re all bored to bits
surely this must be
the most boring game we’ve watched…
if we stayed awake?
The Difference Between the Two Haiku
Shambolic Brazil
They fell apart at the seams
No defensive glue
Germany rampant
Delivered record scoreline
Clinical machine
Time To Learn Anew ~haiku poem 10
in this special land
where they struggle to survive
forced to just endure …
pass and move.. goal ! goal !
pass and move …goal ! goal ! goal !
pass and move…..goal ! goal !
when the penny drops
there’s no consolation found
when you love a team
carried on the wave
cracks we’d seen were opened wide
broken thrashed destroyed
this was something else
love or loathe the German style
how it purred with class
effortless they stream
disciplined this smooth machine
ruthless and precise
Juninho was right
they were taught a lesson here
time to learn anew
where now do they go?
just like us they start again
for a new Brazil
gone a country’s dream
with those tears like Rio rain
crying as they saw…
pass and move – goal ! goal !
pass and move – goal ! goal ! goal !
pass and move – goal ! goal !
Di Stefano-haiku
I was just a lad
when I heard of Alfredo
saw him in a book.
He wore a white shirt
colour of Real Madrid
scoring a great goal.
Hit a fine hat-trick
hammering Eintracht Frankfurt
European Final.
Up their with Puskas
Pele,and Eusebio
could be number one ?
Another legend gone
from an era which was the best
sleep tight Alfredo.
Disappointed Haiku
Just the big guns now
The outsiders entertained
We believed their dreams
They showed us some skill
Came tantalizingly close
But went home too soon
Now we’re near the end
Left with familiar names
A bit of a shame
Diabolical ! Hansen’s Off ~ 11 haiku
when the World Cup ends
we lose someone unafraid
to hit home his point
“passion depth and skill..
pace and movement from the back” …
Hansen will be missed
love or loathe his voice
he taught us to analyse
how we watch the game
sometimes it felt like
all the BBC pundits
came from Liverpool
sat there in that chair
as important as the ball …
so he’d like to think
obstinate and strong
laid back in his tight trousers
and those well-pressed shirts
on his head that scar
from a door he walked into …
or was it?
never lost for words
blasting full backs down the years
Alan’s left his mark
dour deadpan look
never sitting on some fence..
came out with stuff like….
“stonewall penalty….
you cant win with kids…
diabolical!”
it will sure seem strange
when Match of the Day comes back
without Alan there*
Hansen Haiku. x 5
The Jock on the box
Is finally retiring?
Though he isn’t the type.
Listening to him
Sounds like birth control advice
Coming from a priest.
Far too much to say
Talks over the new pundits
Without thinking.
So Goodbye Good Luck
and Good bleeding riddance
We’re well rid.
Football, like he said
Is all about opinions
The above are mine.
Di Stéfano’s Gone~haiku
Di Stéfano’s gone
with him goes another time
when we watched in awe
there in black and while
tearing Eintracht clean apart
on that magic night
in 1960
Alfredo Di Stéfano
taught us something new
in five finals he
played and scored and thrilled us all
in that Real side
I was only 12
but I still recall his strength
farewell Alfredo
World Cup Prediction-haiku
Jules Rimet trophy
18 carat gold statue
14 inches tall.
Can Brazil lift it
will they miss skilful Neymar ?
pressure on the hosts.
Germany up next
a very tough nut to crack
like a Berlin Wall.
Netherlands scrape through
Messi’s Argentina await
will Dutch pop their clogs ?
European Final
or South American teams
could be one from each ?
My prediction is ?
Germany v Argentina
meet in the final.
And hate to say it
Germany will be victors
win on penalties.
But as we all know
football is hard to predict
so don’t bet on it !

Very well put! My recent favourite came when visiting Chesterfield. They have the ‘LMD Vacuum Excavation Stand’.
May be if you’re in the vacuum excavation business, it’s a beautiful sounding name.

Hi Steve
I’ve come across you before on the live poetry circuit…something I’ve also been involved in since the late 90s at slams, gigs and festivals. Did you ever get to Glasto?
I was also at Swindon when José subbed and berated Kevin in a League Cup game for Chelsea….
Salah as you point out went the same way…
Be interesting to see Kev’s next move?

Hey Denys..love this
“You may be a miner working down a pit.
You may be a rock star playing sold out gigs.
You may be a fireman putting out a blaze.
You may be an inmate chalking off the days. ”
Not just Dylan but maybe an unintentional nod to and shades of Ian Dury’s enigmatic ‘What A Waste’ rhythmic scanning..eg:
I could be the driver in an articulated lorry
I could be a poet I wouldn’t need to worry
I could be a teacher in a classroom full of scholars
I could be the sergeant in a squadron full of wallahs
What a waste
What a waste
Was lucky enough to meet and interview him twice.
Best wishes from Forest Green to Genoa C

Thanks Crispin
I’ve been to FGR a couple of times in the past – great food! Barnet look like they have the NL sewn up for this season, but I wish you well for promotion next season.

‘You’re Supposed To Be At Home’ is an excellent and moving poem Denys.
You start off thinking it’s just about another oft-sung chant, one we personally heard a lot last season throughout our second relegation in a row here at Forest Green(FGR) ! I always love poems where you think they are saying one thing and then they suddenly pull you deeper to somewhere or something else else.
I’m currently helping in a local school for FGR in a voluntary capacity using football to help young students with reading. At an upcoming session we will tackle racism, just like we did in workshops at football schools and grounds when we first started this site 24 years ago. I’m gonna try and weave your poem into a session.
We’ve added it to the Anti- Racism/Kick It Out section under Crispin’s Corner.

Great poem Mike Bartram. Eddie was a legend, affectionately known in Liverpool as, “the first hooligan.” Even the hoolies were well dressed in those days. The amazing thing was he was only 26 when that picture was taken. He’d played for Everton youth team and was well known to the players. He never got arrested. They threw him out and he climbed back in, just in time for Derek Temples winner.
I used the picture of him being tackled to the ground on the front cover of my book, “Once Upon a rhyme in Football.” It’s worth looking on youtube and finding the re-enactment of the Wembley scene. Frank Skinner and Baddiel went around to Eddies home in the 1990’s and acted it out on the green outside. It’s hilarious, especially all the effort they put in to get Eddie sober enough to shoot the scene.
