A Footballer’s Life

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 A footballer’s life passes quickly
It’s gone in the wink of an eye
from playground to fame
and to making your name
or moments that just pass you by
where injuries lurk on each corner
potentially ending careers
a footballer’s life is so fleeting
and as little as eight or ten years

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 there are goals that are there in your mindset
and demands from the very word go
the travel the playing recov’ring
that envelop the world you will know
where you train and you analyse tactics
and you get up and do it once more
a footballer’s life is demanding
it’s fragile and risky for sure

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 to the fan or observer it’s tempting
the lucky the chosen the few
the one in a million who make it
the dream it can happen for you
the glamour the package the lifestyle
the level you need to achieve
a footballer’s life is a minefield
whatever you feel or believe

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 and there’s always an eye on the future
for your family once it’s all gone
reality tells you to plan out your life
regardless of how much you’re on
and for many it’s over before its begun
and you’re back where you started once more
a footballer’s life looks outrageous
but beware of the myth and the lure

Notes

This poem inspired by Forest Green’s manager/coach Robbie Savage’s take on long journeys ,staying away and being a footballer today :

“We’ve got a briliant coach. TVs on it. Nice seats. Lovely hotel. Time on the golf course . Rest..Recover. Very lucky. Enjoy it. Embrace it. You’re very, very fortunate .Seats back. Headphones on/ Play games.
It’s a great life being a footballer today .The emotions. Everything”
Robbie Savage -Forest Green Rovers.

Also by these words from a pre-match speech to the Altetico Madrid team this week, by their manager/coach Diego Simeone. This prior to their first ever 5-1 humbling of their lifelong city rivals Real Madrid.
“Play, have fun. You’re good. Enjoy yourselves. A footballer’s life passes quickly, make the most of it; these games don’t come back.’”
Diego Simeone -Atletico Madrid
