Another festive football weekend

So here we go again
Here we go, Here we go
It’s that festive free for all
Merry Christmas to you
And of course yours
Football, now reaching
Saturation point
Pep, sitting in his
Christmas grotto
Stubble on chin
Resolutely unmoved
No razor blades
Or shavers for Guardiola
City refuse to go away
Stubbornly in Arsenal’s
Rear view mirror
But what about that chap
In the red coat and white beard
Presents for
The North London posse
Finally the Premier League
May settle at the Emirates
Fourth time lucky
Since they were the Invincibles
Once, repeatedly so
Or so it seemed
Just ask Thierry Henry
A Highbury giant
And just one of the BBC’s
Finest in the Sports Personality
Of the Year award
A forward festooned with
Yet more glitter and tinsel
At last night’s shindig
But will football put up
It’s tired and battered feet?
Pull up an armchair
Mikel Arteta, a mulled
Wine for Arsenal’s
Most impulsive of midfielders
Now scheming and weaving
On football’s managerial seat
Or will Aston Villa turn back the clock to 1981
When Ron Saunders almost broke
Into the loveliest of smiles
And Villa brought back the
League title to Villa Park?
Liverpool surely out of contention
For replicas of last season’s heroics
Chelsea? No longer the Premier League
Winning architects
Who built a dream
With back to back titles
Just a village and harbour
For those Christmas tourists
Far and wide
Maybe the Blues will suddenly
Wake up in the second half
Of the season
And discover brighter, lighter
Primary colours
Maybe purple patches
Of excellence
It’s almost the
Half way point of the season
And to quote the legendary
Brian Moore
It’s up for grabs
Drama will meet melodrama
Pathos and bathos
In huge helpings with
Christmas pudding
Everything to play for
And perhaps an omen
For Arsenal
Santa revels in red
It could and should be
Yours to hold
Another Premier League trophy
If only for the dazzling skill
Of one Thierry Henry
They do deserve it.
