Evil Eye

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The goalkeeper has an evil eye
penned in black marker
on the palm of his hand
hidden by the soft fabric of his gloves,
fiddling with the Velcro
on his wrist straps at a corner
shouting instructions, pointing,
feeling his fingers stretched
as he hurls his head back,
tips the ball over the bar
to groans from the opposition
& lands on the turf
with a dull, heavy slap,
the smell of wet grass & soil
filling his head.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 He’ll be back on site in the morning,
palms scrubbed clean with a brillo pad,
stale sweat from his gloves still lingering
like hotching egg butties in a plastic bait box.
