Scouse Bayeux Tapestry

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The most magnificent banner
Unfurled beneath those Roman skies
Joey Jones, European Cup Final, 1977
This was before Dalglish pivoted into our hearts
This was before the internet dealt away all secrets
Those who knew, knew,
But most of us, we had to wait
Gathered round the television
Waiting for the pulse to beat
The heart that had stood still since that FA Cup loss
Punched like Ali’s fists: clean, driven, and back to life
We like Joey, defiant, steadfast, victorious,
That banner, poetry in motion.

Notes

“Joey Ate the Frog’s legs
Made the Swiss roll
And now he’s munching gladbach”.

Never bettered.
