Time for a Perthshire Football Rhyme

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 1 I would’ve loved to have…
pulled on a Luncarty FC shirt in Perthshire,
Tying my boots slowly…one more time,
feels good writing a Perthshire football rhyme,
playing in any position, facing any opposition,
at Brownlands Park, Luncarty.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Fourteen seasons have gone
since we met the Club President
the late Jimmy Meiklejohn,
who kindly invited us in, myself and Lynne!
So welcoming was he, soon to the pitch to see,
and in all honesty, quite obviously…
I selfishly thought of me, aged about twenty-three,
aye, wishing I was younger, full of fitness and hunger!

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Dear friends, sporting passion never ends,
the least I can do is to pretend!
I would’ve loved to…
pulled on a Luncarty FC shirt in Perthshire,
laced my boots for my Perthshire roots!
Because Bennet’s were bleachers in Luncarty
and the club carries the name,
in 1886 they formed in the football game.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 For them, let me tell,
someone somewhere is ringing a bell,
in the never forgotten football brain,
not a famous crowd puller
appearing in the black and yellow colour,
this original Rough Hills Ranger,
not quite a total stranger in Luncarty!

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 So from 1884…this far back son did come,
and played his best to impress St Johnstone,
I played on Perth Recreation Grounds,
reaching football heaven,
aiming to play at Muirton Park in 1977.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 Allow me to dream…
and be in that St Johnstone team,
young, competitive and gritty,
playing my heart out in ‘The Fair City’
for all I’m worth, there in Perth!
But, as I was running out,
I heard a familiar Scottish voice shout,
“Get yourself on son,
for The Saints of St Johnstone.”

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 I would’ve loved to, really loved to have…
pulled on a Luncarty FC shirt in Perthshire,
laced my boots for my Perthshire roots!
Tying them slowly…one more time,
feels good writing a Perthshire football rhyme,
Aye! It felt good, and so it ‘blooming well’ should!

Notes

TIME FOR A PERTHSHIRE FOOTBALL RHYME;
You can leave the game, but the game never leaves you! You can stand on the touchline and feel yourself actually playing. There doesn’t even need to be a game being played…other than the one going on in your mind! This happens to me every time I see a football pitch and goalposts…without players. I have a fair few memories and made many friends playing football. Wolverhampton and surroundings had a great football interest in my time. It’s there I see many a pitch that I have played on, some are still here and more than a few have sadly gone! It’s a different feeling for me in Scotland, knowing that I never visited in my sporting prime. A game or a marathon in Fife, Dundee or Perthshire would have been great to look back on. But I can control those feelings because I’m an imaginative man, and the very least I can do is to write about something than didn’t happen, and make believe that it did!
