Why Football ?

Why does it mean so much, to so many ?
A game revered across continents –
From the beaches of Rio to the backstreets
Of Bolton – call it football, call it soccer, call it
Calcio; divided by religion, by culture, by class –
United by an obsessive addiction to the love
Of the ball, the love of a goal, the hope of victory.
Rich and poor, all equal when the whistle
Blows for ninety minutes – a simple science,
To pass, move and score – on a dusty shanty
Town field, or in a plush, manicured stadium.
This is the key – that common creed, based
On the laws of Victorian men – now a
Profession for some and a pastime for millions.
