The Aldershot Town Story

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 This is the story, of guts and glory
Of the club that refused to die
Of sixteen years of hopes and fears
The red flag’s flying high

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Remember 92, requiems were read
All broken and gone, Aldershot dead
Like water, the money drains away
Trust of the faithful, the owners betray

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 But the soul of Aldershot, lives in the fans
Heard in their songs and clapping hands
No court could take away their team
It was their club …it was their dream

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 The club was reformed, due to those
who don’t give up, and the Phoenix arose
Proving you can’t, keep a good team down
Alive and kicking…the new Aldershot Town

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 This is the story, of guts and glory
Of the club that refused to die
Of sixteen years of hopes and fears
The red flag’s flying high

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 So they started again, at the lowest low
Isthmian three, just one way to go
Under Steve Wignall, they storm promotion
Swept along, on a tide of emotion

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Aldershot Town were back

8 Leave a comment on verse 8 0 One promotion more, then Steve departed
An offer came in, from Colchester United
Steve Wigley arrived, all full of possibilities
But results don’t match, his reputed abilities

9 Leave a comment on verse 9 0 Enter the Borg!

10 Leave a comment on verse 10 0 George Borg exploded, in September 97
Declaring he was, our “Saviour from Heaven”
His football was magic, his football was fun.
Aldershot loved it, the league was won

11 Leave a comment on verse 11 0 He talked the talk, promising progress
But walking his walk, didn’t bring success
His style jarred, his manner bluff
By 2001, the fans said… “ENOUGH!!”

12 Leave a comment on verse 12 0 Come on down….Terry Brown

13 Leave a comment on verse 13 0 Terry succeeded, where George had failed
Back on track, after seemingly derailed
He changed it around, and up we went
Into the Conference, at the first attempt

14 Leave a comment on verse 14 0 This is the story, of guts and glory
Of the club that refused to die
Of sixteen years of hopes and fears
The red flag’s flying high

15 Leave a comment on verse 15 0 If I close my eyes and think a while
My mind drifts back to Stoke and Carlisle
Play off defeats, so near yet so far
We always did well, but no cigar

16 Leave a comment on verse 16 0 Now Terry is such, a diamond geezer
But his wife is sick, and as he sees her
fighting against illness, he will decide
to walk away, and be by her side

17 Leave a comment on verse 17 0 There are more important things in life!

18 Leave a comment on verse 18 0 Gary Who…???

19 Leave a comment on verse 19 0 Now he was someone we didn’t expect
But Gary Waddock, soon earns our respect
We realise something special’s begun
Forget Jose, Gary’s the one!

20 Leave a comment on verse 20 0 In his head, not a negative thought
Oh how his team, scrapped and fought
Soon we’re sitting, at the top of the tree
Our only rivals are now Torquay

21 Leave a comment on verse 21 0 We travel to them in the defining match
Its destiny as a late winner we snatch
On the league title, we now take a grip
A prize too precious, to ever let slip

22 Leave a comment on verse 22 0 So the struggle back has finally ended
Up from the ashes, we’ve now ascended
The climb mirrors, how the Shots play
Never straightforward, the Aldershot way

23 Leave a comment on verse 23 0 This is the story, of guts and glory
Of the club that refused to die
Of sixteen years of hopes and fears
The red flag’s flying high

24 Leave a comment on verse 24 0 This story has been of Shots Supporters
Held in ill-repute in some quarters
But they’re the game’s greatest fans
None better in any other stands

25 Leave a comment on verse 25 0 A band of brothers, a special breed
Red and blue, is the colour they bleed
It’s easy to support, a Premiership club
But tough to pull your team from the mud

26 Leave a comment on verse 26 0 If there was one regret it would be
That Paul Muddle wasn’t here to see
The end of the journey for Aldershot
Be sure that he’ll never be forgot

27 Leave a comment on verse 27 0 I’m proud to be a Shot like you
How far we’ve come, since 92
Now we can sing, proud and strong
The Football League is where we belong

28 Leave a comment on verse 28 0 This has been the story, of guts and glory
Of the club that refused to die
Of sixteen years of hopes and fears
The red flag’s flying high………. Still!

29 Leave a comment on verse 29 0 P.S.

30 Leave a comment on verse 30 0 We’re only at the end of Chapter One
The Shot’s rollercoaster has just begun
Jump on board if you’re not faint hearted
The white knuckle ride is just getting started

Notes

To mark the return of Aldershot Town to the Football League, 16 years after they went bankrupt.

Terrific stuff! And great to hear news of Ireland favourite Gary Waddock again! – Ed
