I Dreamt I Woz Gilmar!

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 As a kid I had dreams, I was Gilmar
Without them black polo necks or tweed caps
Wearing an old tee shirt with Brazil blazed across it
Well protected by two fabulous full backs.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Life as a Gilmar looked cushty
Utopia on earth t’ween two posts
Stood passively watching Pele, Gerson, Tostao
Perform poetry in motion, on some other planet than most.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Great saves? Nah I didn’t make that many
Or spend too much time diving on God’s sacred green floor
See if you happen to be Gilmar and you let three goals in
Us Brazilians are more than capable, of replying with four!

Notes

I love that beautiful Brazilian football mentality, where it seems the goalie is a mere bystander watching the action, and defence, what’s that?

The Brazilian meaning of defence is too be camped in the opponents penalty area. Going behind was never a problem to them, in so much as you score three, then we’ll score four.

In the cracking game against the Italians(1980ish), needing only a draw to win the group, they would have probably gone to win that World Cup in Spain, but when in front, their natural ethos to carry on playing all out attacking football cost them the game and they were out.

I always thought being a goalkeeper for the Brazilians, was a cushy job that anybody could do.
