The Long Journey Home.

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 Their faces resembled white marble
Not a word had been spoken on play
Had Gael Clichy broke his metatarsal
Or had Wenger tried long ball in haste?

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Pale pallid faces scanned programmes
Searching for hope….or a laugh
Had the Arsenal got trounced in a home game
Or Van Persie just lasted one half?

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Was the big cup game called off,
That’s scant reason to scoff
A terrible feeling for any travelling fan
Had North London much snow
Not as far as I know
Had the KGB kidnapped Arshevan?

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Kids squeezed up close to their fathers
Birds hugged their blokes near to tears
I’d not seen such masses in sadness
Since attending a funeral last year.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Our train carriage was rampant with…mourning
Till one mobiled kid phoned his mum
“We’re on the train home, so I’m calling
To let you know mum. Arsenal beat Hull by 2-1”.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 You wouldn’t have thought so, judging by their faces
They’d this bleak sadness I’ll always remember
Why is it, if them Gooners don’t dominate every game
Their fan’s monikers remind me of…Wenger?

Notes

Travelling home, alongside fans of The Arsenal, to North West London last night on a late train. I thought some famous Gooner or public figure had died and I’d not heard about it. Everywhere I looked red and white scarved necks had a face above them that looked like a smacked back side.

I was frightened to say to anyone “What was the score mate” in case they ripped me head off as an answer. Luckily this kid phoned his ma to let he her know him and his dad were on their way home from the match and told her the score. Otherwise like them I’d have been suicidal by the time I got home, after all you have to come out in a show of sympathy for other fans who ain’t truly enjoying their football…don’t you?
