Oh let us not remember them this way,
made mortals of by Chilean young guns;
sloppy, misplaced passes, mis-timed runs,
a team that suddenly has had its day.

All things must come to pass; and so this team
that ‘cross the football firmament once strode,
with one-touch passing, seamless as it flowed,
said sad farewell to one-too-many dream.

Let us regale the children not yet born
with tales of Xavi, Ramos, Iniesta.
Let not this sorry valediction fester,
as they troop off the football pitch forlorn.

Let songs be sung and fires scorch the night –
Del Bosque’s mighty army is no more.
Tired and humbled, battle-weary, sore,
but once, oh, how they set the world alight.
