Far Better To Have Fought and……

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 After watching the French team surrender
Then a Belgie side terrified they’d lose (which they did)
I wonder do old pros’ look back and remember
National pride (which is right) then maybe ponder what if?

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Were the Germans and Argentines so much superior
Than the French or Belgie on the day
After all a mere man can only make another feel inferior
If those being put upon agree it’s okay.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 Losing one nil indicates each game was close
If you didn’t get a view of the match
But a follower of football sat indoors on a sofa
Knows said score-line is but a flattering fact.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 I could use the old clichés: so near and yet so far
Or: we came this close to having it all
My point being why didn’t they go for the jugular
When their chance of making history called?

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 Yet in Costa Rica and Columbia respectively
Where national pride is also a powerful thing
You’ve only to watch the team singing collectively
During each anthem, to feel its force growing within.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 These two countries went for it big time
Indeed both were unfortunate to get beat
There was no chance of either being frightened,
Or made to feel inferior, it’s simply not in their brief.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 So in Brussels, Paris, San Jose and Bogota
As twilight on a playing career comes to call
Some may well reflect on: So near and yet so far
While others will reflect on: Far better to have fought
and eventually lose, than never to have fought at all.

Notes

“Argentina are a very average team” Marc Wilmots. “We got off to a slow start, the first period was quite difficult, we didn’t have enough attempts for my taste” Karim Benzema.

I’m sure all the French and Belgie punters who made the pilgrimage to Brazil at great personal and emotional expense, Find those words extremely comforting lads. Straight up they do.

I did ask the boys from Costa Rica and Columbia for a comment, but they were so knackered from their efforts they couldn’t speak to me.

Stay well, be lucky and keep smiling.

Peace.

Kev.
