More Than a Game

They came out of the trenches
Not off the benches
And they all raised their hands as a greeting.
The old leather ball
Broke down the wall,
Called a truce
Because of their meeting.
At the end of the game,
‘The Game with No Name’
They went back to the trenches
Not to the benches
And the war carried on just the same.
But many remember
That day in December
When football called ‘time’ on the war,
When that round leather ball
United them all
With no care as to what was the score.
