Christmas Past and Present Again
¶ 1

It was the perfect present,
Charles Buchan’s Football Monthly Annual,
A book that took me instantly back
To a brown linoleum floor
And a hot fire cold room winter,
Studying a dog eared package
Of 5 year old football monthlies,
A clear-out from my brother’s mate, Paddy, –
Which meant that my very first football readings
Were already elusive and uncertain
Re-enactments of half-forgotten memory:
A tentative recreation of a past,
That enveloped my perfect present.
