The measure of our dreams

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 I buried myself in my sport
There’s no doubt I gave it my all
For whenever a match was mentioned
Without fail, I always heeded the call

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 Put a ball at my feet
And I was off like a whippet
Always to the sound of my own commentary….
“Beats one, beats two”; and that’s just a snippet

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 But post-match
We all loved a thundering tune
And in amongst the crooners and boomers
There was only one who made me swoon

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 “Thousands – are – sailing
A-cross, the west-ern ocean”;
A lachrymose lament to the diaspora
Laced with all sorts of homesick notions

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 “To a land of op-por-tun-ity
That some of them, will never see”;
Just like me and my fellow dreamers
Pro ballers, that we’ll never, ever, be

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 So with “fortune prevailing”
From his Annual Christmas airing
Shane will now join up with Kirsty
Making a fine celestial pairing

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 Meanwhile, all we fans can do
Is continue with our dreaming
In the hope that football and music
Will continue to keep us beaming

Notes

Shane MacGowan, R.I.P. (25/12/1957 – 30/11/2023)
IMHO, the greatest songsmith who ever lived

Apologies to Shane, for using snippets above from his greatest ever song: Thousands Are Sailing (read the lyrics – pure poetry)

I believe Shane was an Everton fan.

He fronted The Pogues, whose members never get the credit they deserved – all brilliant, brilliant musicians. And some of them already departed.

Kirsty MacColl (1959 – 2000) shared the vocals on their biggest hit: Fairytale of New York.

For the earliest version of that song, they used original band member Cait O’Riordan’s vocals. (Her sister used to go out with a good friend of mine).

Yesterday’s sad news brought memories flooding back of the good ‘ol days: football at weekends, and special gigs pogo’ing in the moshpit to The Pogues….
Wishing I still had the energy and fitness!

God rest your soul, Shane
