We’ve won, we’re there, we’re through

About going to the World Cup
Or is he worried about his image rights
And his fortune mounting up

When playing son, yes playing son
Was more important than the pay?

For twenty pieces of silver
Have we now gone and sold our game
For lire, francs and guilders

Notes

Just read a newspaper article, that likens the passing on of George Best to the sad demise of Diana, Princess Of Wales in the way that the public are mourning. I have a feeling that what we are really missing and mourning is one of the last truly great idols and rebels from our game that means so much to us all who stand and sit in the stands. This poem is having a pop at the money men and the idols of today who are a truly second rate version of whats gone before.

*The Jack Rosenthal reference is to a cracking television play yer man wrote about two young female Spurs fans in ultra religious Jewish North London who bunk off school to catch the match in those days when idols really were idols. The play is called “Those Glory Glory Days” or something? If you get a chance catch it.

The Trevor Francis reference is to the time as a fiftheen or sixteen year old he was drafted in to the Birmingham City first team in the old second division and preceeded to score goals for fun with out all the references to the sick note tag he got in his latter playing days!

And Emlyn, what can yer say about Emlyn that hasn’t been said already
With his infectious enthusiam, beaming smile and his lets get in there amongst them! A true leader of men and women as Princess Anne found out on ” A Question Of Sport”. Much to her chagrin.

I feel so much better after that!

peace.
