96 tears

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 The black armbands
And impeccable minutes silence
Tell of the respect and honour
Accorded to every lost soul

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 But this is a repeated reverence
For 19 years we’ve grieved
Not just the friends and relations
But also the football family as a whole

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 They’ll never be forgotten
And they’ll never be just an icon
The pictures of their faces clamped against the fences
Still far too vivid

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 Blame was apportioned
Injudiciously in the headlines
Neglectfully in the courts –
All told, their pointless loss still makes us livid

Notes

For the 96 souls who perished at Hillsborough on the 15th April 1989

There are some events in life that we should be never be allowed to forget.

And I’m conscious that some of our younger poets who are contributing so positively to this site, weren’t even born at the time of the tragic event that is Hillsborough.
