Distracted As We Fall Into League 1
¶ 1

The crowd chant ‘cheat’ and the commentator reports
‘the crowd call him a word starting with C and ending in T’
before suddenly realising that suggests something else entirely
He hazards in a ‘H’ to extricate himself from his problem
but not before a few have a laugh at his initial reaction
Raheem, for it is him, is lying prone on the pitch,
writhing as if hit by a truck when in reality
he’d simply been pushed
A commentator’s nightmare
is often as a result of a language faux pas
and this counts as one of my favourites
despite it inferring a word I detest
As tonight football is all about one thing,
something I want to remain distracted from,
but which is growing increasingly inevitable
The thought that a goal hundreds of miles away
could send my beloved back down to League 1 again
Tonight I’m a Reading fan as I hope they beat Rotherham
and come Saturday we need to beat Kenny’s new team
who are called the Wolves and hope beyond hope
that one of our fiercest rivals can do a job
against their Yorkshire neighbours

But then suddenly it comes through, they’ve scored
and with that moment we are down,
knowing that time is running out for our season to be saved!

And then another goes in and with that I feel we are done, dusted, going down to League 1… 2-0 with 20 minutes to go
and suddenly the equation for the weekend
means nothing at all as now we are down

Even when Reading get one back it’s too late to save us
as 3 minutes of injury time will not be enough,
despite flooding forward and the ball being lumped into the box
with 90 seconds remaining now the home crowd
are growing restless before the whistle comes
With that comes the end and all I can do is think,
what if Bomber, legend, hero and real Millwall,
did get longer as he seemed to be getting them playing in our way and only 3 defeats in 9 matches seems to suggest
that next season things will be different indeed
down in League 1.
