The last blaze of the eve saw the British lions,
Tamed, and exhausted on the Lisborn’s green;
Gazing at the shines of the foodlights, above,
They were blinded by the dazzling embers.

Tears and sweat damped the whole turf.
The missed penalty, unforgiven,
The disallowed goal, unforgotten,
And misery settled within the players’ hearts.
