He brushes a gloved hand
across his brow.
Smiles nervously,
humourlessly,
aware that it’s only just begun,
that this moment of sheer brilliance may amount
to nothing.

The shooter hangs his head,
ashamed,
and sinks back to insigificance,
nestles among his team-mates.
Full of a silent apology,
it’s out of his hands.

One man is free from the cage,
changes places with the other.

The new keeper fails to dive,
falls victim to a cruel deflection,
off the inside of the post.
The ball in the net sneers impassive,
silently joins the crowd’s roaring.
