For all keepers (part 2)

1 Leave a comment on verse 1 0 He brushes a gloved hand
across his brow.
Smiles nervously,
humourlessly,
aware that it’s only just begun,
that this moment of sheer brilliance may amount
to nothing.

2 Leave a comment on verse 2 0 The shooter hangs his head,
ashamed,
and sinks back to insigificance,
nestles among his team-mates.
Full of a silent apology,
it’s out of his hands.

3 Leave a comment on verse 3 0 One man is free from the cage,
changes places with the other.

4 Leave a comment on verse 4 0 The new keeper fails to dive,
falls victim to a cruel deflection,
off the inside of the post.
The ball in the net sneers impassive,
silently joins the crowd’s roaring.

5 Leave a comment on verse 5 0 They roar the game’s cruelest word.

6 Leave a comment on verse 6 0 goal.

7 Leave a comment on verse 7 0 One down, four to go.
