a promise can you make
when writing about football
give Tuesday night a break.

You describe atmospheric Wednesday nights
at Tottenham’s White Hart Lane
but a cup thriller on a Tuesday night
is treated with disdain.

Scouts don’t watch players on sunny days
in Plymouth or in Rome
no– it’s always on a Tuesday night
wet, hungry, far from home.

Seems everyone plays Grimsby
on a rainy, Tuesday night
and the scribes they use this cliche
almost every time they write.

Yes the purists love their Wednesday match,
a cold night is ‘ crisp and cheery’
but a mild night up north on Tuesday
is described as “cold and dreary.”

So I’m not trying to be no Tennyson
or even William Blake
I’m just trying to say ” Come on you guys,”
give Tuesday night a break.
