I Go To The Ground

They nip at my heels.
I stay on my feet.
I trip on the rules.
As my enemies cheat.
Integrity: nothing.
If no one’s around.
My compass is crumbling.
I go to the ground.

Seeking my strength from
the stones once rejected;
the someones like me
who have me protected.
The people like me
who bathe in the sound.
Of the sod’s symphony.
I go to the ground.

Offer my soul
(small price for a sinner)
a second half goal
to go out a winner.
Promise to pay back
forgiveness I’ve found.
Knees in a haystack,
I go to the ground.

Pour man’s communion
alone in the pub.
Tension between
the real world and Club.
The flesh and the blood.
The penny. The pound.
The slip in the mud.
I go to the ground.

Sleep won’t come quickly.
The list just half done.
Problems are prickly.
There isn’t just one.
The quiver is empty.
The bowstring unwound.
Defenseless, so tempt me.
I go to the ground.
